Chapter 13
Sabrina (Siri)
A MONTH LATER
It started with the one pill that first night, but thatâs not where it ended. The complete freedom I felt that night is now something I crave. Iâve visited the club a few more times and bought a few pills from Ray. He warned me to only take one at a time and to space them out with a few days in between and I have.
My nightmares about my father on the nights I take the pills disappear and I can finally sleep in peace. When I donât take them I always wake in a cold sweat, sometimes screaming. It makes me glad that I finally got a bed and moved into the bedroom far away from Toma and Bub. The last thing I need is them busting down my door because they think Iâm getting murdered.
They would do it too. I think from day one they have adopted me as their niece or something, because they treat me like family. Always inviting me to eat and making sure I have what I need. Maybe itâs because they heard me crying when I first moved in and they felt filled with pity? Iâm not sure, but whatever it is that makes them feel like they need to take care of me Iâm grateful. Without them I think my new life would be way too empty and depressing.
Iâm pretty sure Toma at least suspects that Iâm taking drugs but so far he hasnât said anything. Bub normally doesnât talk much, so Iâm not sure what he knows but I guess it doesnât matter. Itâs my choice with how I cope with everything. Or not cope in this case. I just want to forget for a while and I donât think there is anything wrong with that.
âAre you here for more?â Ray asks, sitting next to me on the bench seat in the VIP section. I was so lost in thought that I forgot where I was for a few minutes. The music is loud and booming and the lights are flashing on the dance floor below. How I could miss all of that is really something of a miracle.
âArenât you supposed to be serving guests?â I ask, glancing around, but tonight Iâm actually the only person up here.
âYou are my only guest right now, so Iâm going to give you special treatment if you want,â he whispers in my ear, but I feel nothing. No sexual desire, no discomfort, just nothing.
âI think of you as a friend Ray and thatâs it. Even though you are attractive and friendly, Iâm basically dead below the waist right now,â I tell him with a shrug and he leans away and sighs.
âWell let me know if that ever does change,â he says. Just like Toma said he doesnât try to push things further just accepts my words.
âI will.â
âStill, is it cool if I sit with you for a while? It looks like it's going to be a slow night up here,â he asks and I nod my head.
