A MONTH LATER

It started with the one pill that first night, but that’s not where it ended. The complete freedom I felt that night is now something I crave. I’ve visited the club a few more times and bought a few pills from Ray. He warned me to only take one at a time and to space them out with a few days in between and I have.

My nightmares about my father on the nights I take the pills disappear and I can finally sleep in peace. When I don’t take them I always wake in a cold sweat, sometimes screaming. It makes me glad that I finally got a bed and moved into the bedroom far away from Toma and Bub. The last thing I need is them busting down my door because they think I’m getting murdered.

They would do it too. I think from day one they have adopted me as their niece or something, because they treat me like family. Always inviting me to eat and making sure I have what I need. Maybe it’s because they heard me crying when I first moved in and they felt filled with pity? I’m not sure, but whatever it is that makes them feel like they need to take care of me I’m grateful. Without them I think my new life would be way too empty and depressing.

I’m pretty sure Toma at least suspects that I’m taking drugs but so far he hasn’t said anything. Bub normally doesn’t talk much, so I’m not sure what he knows but I guess it doesn’t matter. It’s my choice with how I cope with everything. Or not cope in this case. I just want to forget for a while and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

“Are you here for more?” Ray asks, sitting next to me on the bench seat in the VIP section. I was so lost in thought that I forgot where I was for a few minutes. The music is loud and booming and the lights are flashing on the dance floor below. How I could miss all of that is really something of a miracle.

“Aren’t you supposed to be serving guests?” I ask, glancing around, but tonight I’m actually the only person up here.

“You are my only guest right now, so I’m going to give you special treatment if you want,” he whispers in my ear, but I feel nothing. No sexual desire, no discomfort, just nothing.

“I think of you as a friend Ray and that’s it. Even though you are attractive and friendly, I’m basically dead below the waist right now,” I tell him with a shrug and he leans away and sighs.

“Well let me know if that ever does change,” he says. Just like Toma said he doesn’t try to push things further just accepts my words.

“I will.”

“Still, is it cool if I sit with you for a while? It looks like it's going to be a slow night up here,” he asks and I nod my head.
